They say the best way to start writing online is just to start. I’ve read it as a tip in numerous posts about how to build an audience. It doesn’t matter if the first posts are terrible. They can be “shitty first drafts,” as Anne Lamott refers to them in an essay that I haven’t actually read.
I used to think that a blog had to have a specific niche, a focus, somehow finding a special corner of the internet that wasn’t already crowded by tens or hundreds of other bloggers telling you how to cook, parent, or garden. Plus, blogs are so twenty years ago. They’re just not the platform that people choose when seeking an audience in 2025. That happens on Instagram and TikTok.
When I set out to build this site, I realized if it was MY website, I could do with it as I choose. I’m not too concerned with finding an audience or marketing my blog. I’m not starting this to gain followers.
I’m starting this to carve out my own space in the big internet. I’ll write what I want, when I want, and find my voice. I hope to use it to build a portfolio of writing that will showcase my work to future employers or clients, through being authentic and and writing for myself.
